Rosh Hashanah

Also called the Jewish New Year (or the days of awe), this ten-day period begins with Rosh Hashanah and ends with Yom Kippur. The most important of all Jewish High Holy days, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are purely religious, not related to any historical or natural event.

Rosh Hashanah (head of the year) is a festive, family event that lasts two days, beginning on a Friday at sundown, to celebrate the beginning of a new year and mark the anniversary of the world’s creation. The holiday involves a number of symbolic foods, and both the Ashkenazi, whose ancestors emigrated principally from Eastern Europe, and the Sephardim, whose ancestors came primarily from the Mediterranean region and North Africa, say a blessing over apple slices dipped in honey to signify a sweet year to come. Chicken soup and dumplings might be served, followed by fish, and always the sweet egg-based challah bread, baked into a round loaf to represent the year’s wholeness. A traditional menu always includes dishes prepared with fruits—chicken with apricots and marmalade, for example, or lamb with prunes and dates. Seasonal fruit is at the table and is part of the New Year prayer: “May your seeds be as many as the pomegranate.” Whatever the menu, sweetness is the prevailing theme.
